We talk a lot of viral video, saying that it’s the biggest sensation on the internet. But is plain ol video is more powerful my marketing than by going Viral? One “viral” video is that of Susan Boyle, when she came out looking like a British Grimace and wowed the audience with a song from Les Miz. On the other hand you have Lady Gaga, whose record label poured millions into marketing, and GaGa had a huge tour and dozens of tv performances. Her song “Bad Romance” experiences heavy rotation on top 40, and has huge digital sales. Now Susan Boyle came from a professionally made highly popular tv show, but the power of the video didn't come from production and marketing, it came from her. And how she inspired people with her dream. So what is more popular, the gift of a lonely old woman discovering her voice before its too late and inspiring millions, or a former stripper in her early twenties dressing like a character from Silent Hill. Lets look:
Susan Boyle - Britains Got Talent 2009
Total Views: 86,263,217
Lady Gaga - Bad Romance
Total Views: 92,062,005 views
Lady Gaga handily defeats Susan Boyle with damn near 100 Million views (Her video for “Just Dance” is actually higher at 94 million). So marketing beats the human spirit. Figures.
Until Next time I Remain… Viral.
